Here in New Mexico, we’re fortunate to have many facilities entirely focused on the delivery of pain management services and extremely competent pain management physicians practicing here.
If you’re living with pain, you may be thinking about sourcing the services of a specialized pain management clinic. But what should you expect?
Managing pain
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem of pain. Everyone experiences pain differently and pain is caused by numerous anomalies and conditions.
Because of the nature of pain, the solution to your experience of it is going to be unique. This is the goal of pain management – to tailor care by targeting the patient’s individual problem and the type and intensity of the pain being experienced.
You probably know the cause of your pain. And you have more knowledge about what works and what doesn’t; what mitigates pain and what exacerbates it. You know more about it, as you’re in a relationship with it.
That means you’re the starting point of finding pain management solutions that work. Those solutions lie within you.
Activity
You’re ground zero for addressing your pain. But you’re also a partner in finding the right pain management tools and improving your quality of life.
Part of managing your pain is to resist the overwhelming temptation to sit and wait for it to stop. But physical activity is what the human body is made for and if you’re not moving around enough, you’re going to get stiff and that makes the pain worse.
Pain can haul you up short, so part of a pain management clinician’s work is to look for ways to keep you moving. Adding movement gradually, you’ll find that the prescribed activity is enormously helpful.
Other therapies
Your pain management clinician will talk to you in-depth about the intensity and duration of your pain and the condition that’s causing it. Then, you’ll talk about potential therapies. Some of these are:
- Physical therapy – you’ll learn to move your body more effectively, by pinpointing specific groups of muscles, improving body alignment and biomechanical function.
- Massage therapy – this doesn’t cure pain, but a massage therapist relaxes and loosens muscles, bringing you a temporary relief which can be built on and which serves as respite.
- Meditation and deep breathing – Learning to control your physical and intellectual responses to pain leaves you better equipped to manage it. Control is your goal, as while pain is a very real physical state, it’s the mind that’s in charge. Learning to take control is part of the solution.
