What is Peripheral Artery Disease?

Peripheral artery disease is a common circulatory problem in which the narrowing of arteries reduces the blood flow to your limbs.

When you start to develop peripheral artery disease (PAD), your limbs — usually your legs — don’t receive enough blood flow to keep up with the blood flow that is needed. This causes symptoms such as leg pain when walking.

Peripheral artery disease can also be part of a bigger issue which is widespread accumulation of fatty deposits in your arteries. This condition could be reducing the blood flow to your heart, brain, and your legs.

You can help put together a successful treatment plan for peripheral artery disease by quitting tobacco products, exercising regularly, and eating a healthier diet.

Risk factors

Factors that increase your risk of developing peripheral artery disease include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
