Arterial Disease
Peripheral Arterial Disease — Everything You Need To Know
Whether you’re going for a morning walk or hurrying to your workplace, there may be times when your legs experience bouts of discomfort. But before you write it off as normal soreness, you may want to examine it further. Because it could be a sign of Peripheral Arterial Disease — an underdiagnosed condition with very serious consequences. In fact, Peripheral Arterial Disease (if untreated) can even lead to amputation of the affected area. At X-Ray Associates of New Mexico, our team of radiologists fully understand the dangers of PAD. That’s why we provide screenings with the goal of catching and treating the condition before it takes control over your life.
Look for these Warning Signs
The levels of leg pain associated with Peripheral Arterial Disease (or PAD for short) differ from person to person and range from mild irritation to excruciating pain. The most common symptom is a noticeable amount of cramping and numbness in the affected leg(s). Walking usually triggers the presence of discomfort. But you’ll find that the pain subsides after a few minutes of rest.
When the aching starts, take note of its precise area. Because it coincides with the location of the blocked or narrowed artery.
See your physician if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Painful cramping in the hip, thigh, leg, and calf area while walking or climbing stairs
- A feeling of numbness in legs
- The presence of sores on toes, feet or legs
- Leg discoloration
- Hair loss or reduce hair growth on legs and feet
- A weakened pulse or lack of pulse in legs or feet
- Erectile dysfunction
Strong Risk Factors
Even if you haven’t encountered these warning signs yet, you should get screened if you:
- Are approaching or reached the age of 50
- Are obese
- Have a history of diabetes
- Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
- Have or had a smoking habit
- Have a family history of heart or arterial disease
Prevention and Treatment
To figure out how to prevent Peripheral Arterial Disease, simply look at the risk factors and try to do the opposite.
In short:
- Quit smoking
- Keep your blood sugar under control
- Lower your blood pressure and cholesterol level
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Engage in moderate exercise on a regular basis.
If you’re currently experiencing leg pain and are over the age of 50, it’s best to not take a chance with your health.
